FROM BLOCK TO BEDROOM
Five stages, one workshop in Sanganer
Sanganeri printing has stayed almost unchanged since Chippa artisans settled near Jaipur in the late 1500s — royal patronage once paid for it, careful hands still do.
Carving the block
A master carver cuts each motif into seasoned teak by hand. One detailed block can take up to three weeks to finish.
2–20 days per block
Mixing the dye
Indigo, madder root and turmeric are prepared in small batches. All our dyes are azo-free and skin-safe.
1 day, by hand
Hand printing
The block is dipped and pressed onto stretched cotton, motif by motif, realigned by eye for every repeat.
3–5 presses / minute
Sun drying
Printed lengths dry outdoors in Sanganer's open courtyards, which is what gives the colour its particular clarity.
4–6 hours, open air
Wash & quality check
A pre-shrink wash sets the dye, then every length is checked by hand for print alignment before it's cut and stitched.
